Description
During the time of the occupation of Germany by the Grand Army of the Rhine following World War II, German political leaders and American generals shopped around for ways to reduce frictions between the cohabiting populations. One of the happiest solutions was "Volksmarching," a merger of the German tradition of rambling or hiking with the Americans' propensity for barbecues and beer. It was a loosely organized hike. The pattern was to meet for a coffee and orientation, then to hike or walk or jog several kilometers out to some historical or scenic location where food and liquid refreshments was served while trampers refreshed before continuing on the return leg. Most volksmarches offered a medal or pin, many a T-shirt, and some had more elaborate premiums such as beersteins, plates or porcelain statues. This is a very attractive plate that appears to be hand-painted. It is from "Dittweiler 1988." Dittweiler is a small city in the southwest of Germany. This plate bears the image of a Western Yellow Wagtail, or "Schafstelze" perched on a rock. Above this scene is "13.INT.VOLKSWANDERUNG" or thirteenth international volksmarch. The plate has two perforations on the reverse for a hanger and a brass wire installed for hanging, butno marks. The plate is about 7 1/2" in diameter. It has no repairs, cracks, crazing or chips. Absolutely beautiful.
